In the fall semester the program includes both leadership and civic development training to provide first year students a baseline of skills to positively engage with community. Students will also be exposed to Winston Salem and gain insights into their community. In the spring semester, student’s will apply their skill and knowledge to a specific project that has been proposed by a partner organization doing civic and/or social justice work.
Throughout the process the team of first year students will be led by upper classmen student leaders. Each team of five to six first year students will be paired with two student leaders. These leaders will serve as mentors to the first year students, providing insight about their own experience engaging with communities and guiding the projects to completion. Effective student leaders will have a demonstrated commitment to community based development and to mentorship in addition to a commitment to inclusive community building.
